YOGYAKARTA, August 17, 2026 – To commemorate the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, lecturers and staff from the Department of Soil Science solemnly attended the August 17, 2026 Flag Ceremony. Held at the Balairung courtyard of the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) campus, the event served as a key moment to foster nationalism, remember the sacrifices of national heroes, and reinforce civic commitment within the academic community.
Lecturers lined up in traditional Indonesian attire alongside black-and-white formal wear, symbolizing cultural diversity and unity among the academic community. The ceremony—which featured the raising of the Red and White flag, the reading of the Proclamation text, and an address by the ceremony leader—proceeded smoothly and solemnly. The Soil Science Department’s active participation underscores that academics remain dedicated to upholding the nation’s struggle and values alongside scientific advancement.
Participation in this Independence Day celebration aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), by fostering national character and supporting inclusive, principled educational institution governance. Additionally, the department’s ongoing dedication to sustainable land management research embodies true service toward national food sovereignty and land conservation, contributing to SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
