On 21 November 2024, an important activity took place in Banggai Regency, Central Sulawesi, where a team led by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Junun Sartohadi, M.Sc. conducted a rapid reconnaissance soil survey aimed at supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 related to agriculture. This initiative was crucial for understanding soil health and fertility, which are fundamental to sustainable agricultural practices in the region. The activity was part of efforts to support the implementation of a Detailed Investigation Study (SID) in order to generate in-depth data on soil characteristics, land fertility potential, and soil management challenges in the area. Banggai Regency has highly diverse topography, ranging from lowlands to mountainous areas, resulting in complex geographic conditions. This diversity makes the region strategically important for various development potentials such as agriculture, forestry, and infrastructure, while simultaneously posing challenges for spatial planning and natural resource management.

The soil survey was carried out using a rapid reconnaissance approach, combining several methods including field observation, visual analysis of soil profiles, interviews with local communities, and the use of geospatial technology. This approach enabled the team to collect accurate preliminary data within a relatively short time frame. Soil sampling was also conducted at several strategic locations representing the overall physical conditions of Banggai Regency. The resulting data are expected to support local governments and other stakeholders in informed decision-making for regional development planning.

This activity also aimed to provide practical recommendations for sustainable soil management, particularly for the agricultural sector, which is a key livelihood for the people of Banggai. Although Banggai Regency has significant agricultural potential, it also faces challenges such as soil erosion, declining soil fertility, and environmental degradation due to suboptimal land management practices. Based on the survey results, the team led by Prof. Junun Sartohadi outlined mitigation measures that can be implemented, including soil conservation technologies, efficient water management, and rehabilitation techniques for degraded land.

The results of this soil survey are expected to serve as a foundation for future regional development in Banggai Regency. With the generated data and recommendations, local governments are anticipated to formulate development policies that not only maximize regional potential but also maintain ecological balance. As a region with rich natural diversity and significant potential, Banggai Regency now has the opportunity to become a successful model for sustainable soil and natural resource management in Indonesia.
