This guest lecture was filled by Prof. Stefaan De Neve from the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Ghent University, Belgium. On the sidelines of his visit to establish cooperation with Soil Department, he had the opportunity to give public lectures to undergraduate students and post-graduate students (S2 and S3) of the Department. This public lecture was moderated by Dr. Benito Heru Purwanto, M.Agr as a Head of the Soil Department.

This guest lecture was divided into 2 sessions. The first session is on Wednesday, November 21, 2018. Guest lectures on this session had a theme of Soil Fertility. This lecture is given to undegraduate students of Soil Department who are currently taking Soil Fertility courses this semester.

In this lecture, Prof. Stefaan did not only explain the principle theory of Soil Fertility, but also explained the important connection of soil fertility in land management. He explained that soil fertility cannot be separated from its relation to nutrient management. At the same time on this occasion, he also provided an applicative description of several field activities on nutrient management in maintaining soil fertility.

Whereas the second session was given on Thursday, November 22, 2018. The guest lecture was filled with the theme “Scientific Writing and Publication Clinic”. The guest lecture for this session was given to postgraduate students of Soil Department. It is hoped that the “scientific writing” lecture will help postgraduate students in creating publications which indeed become one of graduation requirements.

At present, publications are considered as a scourge for some postgraduate students because of the difficulties faced in preparation process. However, in this guest lecture, Prof. Stefaan provided the tips and tricks in making a publication so that it could be easily accepted by the editorial of a journal. Therefore, by listening to this lecture, students are expected to be more motivated in making publications properly and correctly according to the rules of scientific writing.
